If you’ve recently had a bone graft in West Seneca, New York, you’re on your way toward a restored oral health! However, that’s only the case if you take the recovery process seriously. If you don’t, there is a chance you could run into severe consequences. So, to help you heal properly after treatment, Dr. Tammy Perison and our dental team encourage you to do the following things:

Step No. 1: Stop the bleeding and reduce swelling by keeping a clean gauze pad over the surgical site. Apply pressure to the pad for about an hour and then discard it. It’s also best to ice the area by cooling it with an ice pack in 30-minute intervals for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Step No. 2: Take medications to help with the pain and possible infections. Your dentist will likely prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to keep you comfortable and healthy. Make sure you closely follow the instructions when taking the medication and don’t stop taking the antibiotic until it is gone.

Step No. 3: Watch your diet for the first 24 hours after surgery. It’s best to stick to a soft-foods diet and drink plenty of liquids. When eating, chew away from the surgical area so you don’t affect the incision or stitches. When drinking, avoid using straws. Straws tend to dislodge the clot and encourage bleeding.

Step No. 4: Rest as much as you can for two to three days after surgery. This will help you recover faster.
